Just one week in, and this year's Cannes Film Festival red carpet has already provided us with plenty of glamorous celebrity style – with the likes of Natalie Portman, Alicia Vikander and Gigi Hadid impressing in their couture gowns and high jewellery.
It was Jennifer Lawrence's turn to walk the red carpet yesterday, and she did so in particularly relatable fashion. The actress attended the premiere of French thriller Anatomie D'une Chute (Anatomy Of A Fall), wearing a beautiful custom red crepe silk Dior couture gown, which featured a ruched bodice, matching stole and full layered skirt – but it was her footwear that proved particularly interesting. Lawrence initially walked the red carpet in a pair of co-ordinating red heels, but later swapped them for a pair of flat black flip-flops.

The comfortable shoes could be seen peeking out from below her dress as she descended those famous red steps.
It's a particularly notable move, given the strict dress code that the Cannes Film Festival has become renowned for. For years, festival organisers imposed a controversial 'no flat shoes' rule, insisting that women must wear heels on the red carpet – with reports that they turned a group of women away in 2015. Understandably, many stars have since flouted the outdated rule – with some opting to go without shoes altogether.
In 2018, Kristen Stewart famously kicked off her black high Christian Louboutin stilettos at the screening of Blackkklansman, instead walking the red carpet completely barefoot. At the time, the actress said: "I feel like you can’t ask people that any more. If you’re not asking guys to wear heels and a dress, you cannot ask me either.... I get the black-tie thing but you should be able to do either version — flats or heels."

Julia Roberts also made a memorable barefoot appearance on the Cannes red-carpet for the premiere of Money Monster in 2016, removing her heels midway through.
"A lot was happening from my ankles up," she told Australia’s Sunrise channel afterwards. "Let’s not forget all that. A lot of time and effort went into ankles up. I just want to say for the record … I looked nice last night!"

Emily Blunt also chimed in with her disapproval at the antiquated dress code. "Everyone should wear flats, to be honest. We shouldn’t wear high heels," she said back in 2016. "That’s very disappointing, just when you kind of think there are these new waves of equality."
